Head of Underwriting

JCW is currently working on behalf of a fast-growing digital wholesale brokerage seeking a strategic and data-driven underwriting executive to lead its E&S P&C underwriting portfolio, with a strong focus on binding authority business. Representing the majority of the company’s premium volume, this role will guide underwriting strategies and procedures at the portfolio level and drive profitable growth through strong carrier relationships and cross-functional collaboration.

You’ll work closely with distribution, product, engineering, and data teams to monitor performance, refine underwriting rules, and optimize the use of digital tools and models. The position also plays a key role in enhancing carrier partnerships and expanding appetite through algorithmic and programmatic underwriting innovation.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee performance of the binding authority underwriting portfolio and drive profitability across carriers and classes of business.

• Partner with carrier and internal stakeholders to implement and evolve underwriting strategies.

• Monitor data and performance trends to identify risks and opportunities early, adjusting guidelines accordingly.

• Set underwriting procedures and work with regional leaders to ensure consistent application and regional relevance.

• Champion new product launches by advising on appetite, prioritization, and underwriting design.

• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to enhance algorithmic underwriting models and platform functionality.

Key Qualifications:

• 10+ years in E&S commercial underwriting, particularly in binding authority or program business.

• Deep experience with small/mid-market GL, property, and excess casualty.

• Proven success with digital or algorithmic underwriting models.
